Mathes Brierre Architects designed numerous landscape architectural plans for Dillard University from 2003 through 2007. The firm designed new open space areas and student plazas for the DUICEF building, a garden for the new library addition, and planting improvement plans for various areas throughout the campus. A new memorial wedding reception garden was designed for the front of Lawless Chapel to be implemented during renovation of the chapel.
After the post-Katrina flood ravaged the entire campus, killing or damaging much of the tree canopy, and destroying all lawn areas, Mathes Brierre Architects was hired to direct the recovery of the campus landscape. We surveyed and analyzed the entire campus tree inventory, and directed a team of arborists in the removal of trees that were not salvageable, and the restoration and preservation of the Live Oak canopy. The firm oversaw repair of all irrigation lines throughout the campus, soil treatments, and replanting of sod and shrubbery everywhere. The astounding transformation was done within 4 months of Mathes Brierre’s hire in order to prepare for the annual outdoor graduation ceremony the spring following the flood.
