As part of a series called “The Future of Work,” Newsweek Magazine challenged three professional design firms in New Orleans to ponder what the future of the city might look like 20 years from now. The participants were asked to focus on four particular aspects of life in the city: work, living, commuting, and recreation. Since Hurricane Katrina made landfall in 2005, all aspects of life in the city of New Orleans are being transformed as the city redevelops.
New Orleans will become a more sustainable place to live in the future, with improvements in self-sustenance, storm survivability, and economic resilience. The vibrant urban core will make new strides in livability and cultural preservation, while stronger ties to the surrounding region will provide greater leverage of economic resources. Finally, coastal wetland restoration will have to be successfully accomplished to restore New Orleans’ critical front line of storm defense and to rebuild a healthy aquatic ecosystem.
